thalamus: The section of the brain that acts as a relay station transmitting the sensation of pain from sensory nerves.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): A controversial procedure using electrical impulses that is believed to help stimulate and desensitize nerves in the skin.

trigger point: Any area that becomes highly sensitive and when touched or under pressure produces pain.

visceral pain: Sensations produced by organs including the heart, kidneys and lungs.

wind-up pain: Also called sensitization, this is produced by a chemical release in the nerve cells that increases the pain message as it relays to the brain.
